David Jacob Hoffman

June 16, 1935 — July 11, 2014

David (Dave) Jacob Hoffman, 79, avid resident of Sedona for 22 years, died last Friday. He will be missed by his wife Maurine Romney Hoffman, step-daughters Diana Rogers and Alissa Molden (Rick), grand-children Nicholas, Sean, and Lily, and a slightly eccentric, enormous, extended family who knew him to be a knowledgeable, entertaining conversationalist and enthusiastic activity companion.

Dave was born in New York City to Robert and Zipporah Chippie Hoffman. He attended Horace Mann prep, then Harvard University. Dave traveled extensively for a career in geological and mineral exploration, residing for a time in New York City. He then married Maurine (whom he met in Mexico) in Westport, CT, where they lived for almost 20 years prior to moving to Sedona.

Dave had the mind of a scientist, heart of an explorer, grit of a pioneer, and soul of a philosopher. He delighted in anecdotes both sublime and profane. He had an equally intense love of nature, and a deep appreciation for culture, cuisine and urban experiences. He was passionate about gems, hiking (esp. Mt. Wilson), sailing, art, opera, tea and a wide variety of interests and information that he was always happy to share with friends, family and new acquaintances. He was a member of the Elks Club, Harvard Club, and Explorers Club. He was owner of Towne Mines Exploration Company and a trustee in Mesabi Trust (retired).

A memorial honoring his life and its impact on the lives of friends and family will be held at 9:45 am Saturday at Sedona Creative Life Center. Friends and family are invited to the Hoffmans house for refreshments immediately afterward.
The family would like to thank Verde Valley Community Hospice and Country Care Assisted Living Center for their excellent care during the last few months of Davids life.
