Dot Nabors

Dorothy (Dot) Jean Nabors (Merritt) passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Dec 14th, 2023 in Cottonwood, Arizona near Sedona after a tough battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, just one week after her 92nd birthday. Dot was born prematurely on Dec 7th, 1931 in Waco, TX to Emily and Orville Merritt. Dot grew up in Waco and was a proud Texan, enjoying football as well as baseball.

She grew up in Waco, Texas with her parents and her older sister, Beverly, who she looked up to. Dot was a thoughtful person; her compassion earned her many friends throughout her life whom she cared for deeply. She enjoyed conversation and always made a point to get to know those around her and she throughly enjoyed social events and organizing fun activities with her friends.

Dot was married in Waco, TX to Robert “Bob” Edward Nabors in 1953. They had their first daughter, Beverly, in 1958, then Donna came along in 1961. Dot began working as a Real Estate agent in Oklahoma City in the 1970s and she continued her work in her later years as a Realtor in Denver, Colorado after Bob retired from working many years as an executive in the Oil Business. Dot was also a talented painter and found time to create many paintings of animals as well as landscapes.

Dot enjoyed traveling the country with family and with friends, including trips to Hawaii with her husband, as well as an unforgettable trip to Alaska with her friend Clara to see the northern lights.

Dot shared a love of baking and sweets. Her granddaughter remembers going door-to-door with her grandma as a child, delivering Dot’s candy boxes with a business card to her potential clients. Dot instilled in her granddaughter a strong sense of drive and self-reliance, often telling her to “never settle,” that she attributes to her grandma even to this day.

After her husband’s passing in 2018, Dot moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico then Sedona, Arizona to be closer to her remaining family. As she resisted the stages of Alzheimer’s disease, she was never rude nor angry with nursing home staff nor loved ones. Those close to her felt her persistent humor and kindness showed she didn’t have a mean bone in her body.

She leaves behind her loving daughter, Beverly, granddaughter, Victoria, and Victoria’s husband, Scott, all of whom still reside in Arizona, as well as her grandson Dustin who resides in Colorado with his wife Alyssa, and their 3 children.
