Emma Lou Healey died Saturday, August 28, 2010 in Cottonwood. She was 91 years old.
Emma was born on July 15, 1919 in Asheville, North Carolina. She was raised in North Carolina and received her Bachelor and Master degrees from Western Carolina University. After teaching in North Carolina for a while, she and her husband Joseph, whom she married on July 19, 1961 in Charleston, South Carolina, went abroad to teach. She taught at American dependent schools in Japan, Germany, and Africa and he was a school administrator.
They enjoyed the climate in Africa so much that, in 1961, they decided to move to Arizona which has a similar climate. She taught in the Phoenix school system and then moved to Sedona in 1969 and began teaching in Cottonwood. When the West Sedona Elementary School was built, she began teaching second grade there.
Emma is survived by her son Patrick Healey of Conifer, Colorado. She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph on September 14, 1979.
A memorial mass will be held for her at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Sedona on Saturday, September 4 at 10:00AM.
