John D. Gardner, 91, a resident of Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek, died October 6, 2013.
Born in Washington, Iowa, in 1921, Mr. Gardner was a Navy pilot and flight instructor in World War II. He was married for 61 years to his beloved wife, Phyllis, who died in 2005. Prior to retiring and moving to Sedona, he was an optical engineer for Ford Aerospace in California, working on various military projects.
Mr. Gardner was active in the Sedona United Methodist Church and the adult community center. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Verde Valley Caregivers. He was instrumental in the design and completion of the columbarium at Sedona Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Sedona Camera Club and was an active photographer and an amateur astronomer his whole life.
John is survived by his two daughters, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Greer's Mortuary of Sedona assisted with the arrangements. A memorial service will be held at Sedona Methodist Church on Thursday, October 10, 2013 @ 1:00PM. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the church.
