TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF MARY LYNN (MILLER) JOHNSON
March 12, 1938 - December 22, 2011
Mary Lynn (Miller) Johnson of Denton, Texas, age 73, passed away December 22, 2011 in Cornville, Arizona. She was a graduate of Pampa High School, received her Bachelors Degree at the University of Texas at El Paso, her Masters Degree at New Mexico State University and her PhD in "Fuels Science" from The Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. Johnson was the Air Pollution Chemist for the City of El Paso in the early 1960s. She later taught chemistry, combustion chemistry, air pollution studies, and physics at various times in her career. In 1986 she was selected to participate in a "People to People" good will trip to China as an expert in air pollution.
She taught at the University of Texas at Arlington, and in Dallas, Brookhaven College, The Hockaday School, and Highland Park High School. She was listed in many Who's Who publications including "Who's Who in American Men and Women of Science" and "World's Who's Who of Women". She was a recipient of the Martha Washington Medal and the Good Citizenship Medal
for her patriotic activities by the Texas Society Sons of the American Revolution.
Active in church work for many years she was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and at another time a deacon in the Congregational Church. She taught Sunday School for a total of 23 years. Her principal goal in life was to help and to serve others. During her struggle with pulmonary fibrosis, she never denied life and bravely faced every challenge. She cherished her time with family, especially grandchildren, and always placed the needs of others above her own.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James J. (Jim) Johnson Jr.; daugher Melinda Casey-Foster; son James J. (Jeff) Johnson III,
daugher-in-law Joanne of Cornville; four grandchildren Chris Casey and Robby Foster of Denton and Wes Johnson and Holly Johnson of Cornville; and two cousins, Myrna Lee Ravenscroft of Hemmitt, California and Steve Shutt of LaSalle, Illinois.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Denton at a time and date to be announced. Memorials may be made, in her name, to "Running Strong for American Indian Youth", the National Wildlife Federation, or a charity of your choice.
