Robert H. Wellington Jr.
July 4, 1922 - February 10, 2011
Robert (Bob) Hall Wellington, Jr. (88) passed
away peacefully at his home in Sedona, Arizona
on Thursday, February 10, 2011. He was born in
Atlanta, Georgia, on July 4, 1922 and was raised
in Evanston, Illinois. He received a Bachelor of
Science degree in mechanical engineering from
Northwestern University before entering the U.S.
Navy where he served as an officer on an
aircraft carrier during World War II in the Pacific Theater. After the war he began work for the Griffin Wheel Company, while completing an
MBA at the University of Chicago at night. On
November 15, 1947 he married his high school
sweetheart Marjorie (Marge) Anita Jarchow, who
after 59 years of marriage, preceded him in
death on September 12, 2006.
He is survived by his four children; Charles Robert (Christine), Monroe, WI;
Robert Hall III (Donna), Dallas, TX; Christian John (Elizabeth), Galena, IL; and
Jeanne Snyder (Benjamin), Swansea, IL. Eight grandchildren also survive him:
Jessica, Lindsay, Ashley, Robert Hall IV, Jason, Jamie, Robert Hayes, and
Christian John (CJ). A ninth grandchild, Jonathan, preceded him in death in
1999. In addition, four wonderful great grandchildren: Hunter, Jack, Ethan and
Marjorie Grace, will sorely miss his presence.
Robert Wellington served as President and CEO of Amsted Industries until his
retirement at the age of seventy. He served on the Boards of several
organizations and businesses. He had a keen love of the outdoors and especially
enjoyed canoeing, fishing, and camping. He was an avid horseman and loved
raising and riding horses throughout his adult life. He also had a special place in
his heart for the home that he and Marge established in the red rocks of Sedona,
Arizona, in 1979.
He and his wife, Marge generously supported people and causes in need and
preferred to do so quietly and behind the scenes. Together and individually, they
left a rich legacy of family love and caring for others. He will be deeply missed by
all who knew him.
A memorial service for both Bob and Marge is being planned for this summer. In
lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Compassus at 70 Bell Rock
Plaza, Suite A, Sedona, AZ 86351, or The Nature Conservancy.
