William Herbert Lyons

William Herbert Lyons, 83, of Sedona, Arizona passed away August 29th, 2009. Born December 22, 1925 in Bronx, New York, he was the son of Herbert William Lyons and Irene Manley Lyons. After graduation fron high school in New York, Bill joined the Navy, was trained as an electrician and served as a submariner during World War II in the Pacific campaign.

Bill found his career within the television / entertainment industry, initially with WOR, New York as a camera operator for the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field, but later found his true niche at Columbia Broadcasting System where he worked directly for CBS Chairman William Paley. Bill traveled the world during his career with CBS and worked with many noteworthy people.

Upon retiring, Bill moved to Sedona, Arizona and became active in the local community, taking great joy from working with the Sedona FIlm Festival, Canyon Moon Theater, Western Americana, Red Rock Pathways, Keep Sedona Beautiful, Sedona Arts Festival / Academy Awards, Hands Across History, Sedona Main Street and Jazz on the Rocks Youth Band. He was an Honorary Member of the Sedona Jewish Community and was continually active in promoting the Arts and Film in the area.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Patricia B. Lyons, and is survived by his brother, Robert J. Lyons and wife Eleanor Lyons; sons, William H. Lyons Jr. and Robert B. Lyons; and his grandson, William Lyons III.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony and theatre dedication will be held September 16, 2009 at Harkins Theatre in Sedona at 11:00 AM. Doors open at 10:30 AM. Flower donations accepted Tuesday, September 15th at the Sedona Film Festival, 1785 W. Highway 89A #2B, Sedona, Arizona 86336.
