Our good friend Wilma succumbed to a vicious and fast-moving cancer
on February 12, 2011, hardly two-weeks after after her initial diagnosis. She
was 92 years old and her passing is deeply mourned by the many whose lives
she touched during her 44-year residency in Sedona. She was born to Lars and Lillian Rasmussen in Port Angeles, Washington State on
October 21, 1918. After schooling in the US Northwest, she continued north
to the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, from which she graduated in 1940.
She remained in Alaska working as an administrator for government entities
including the US Army Quartermaster Corps and the U.S. Geological Survey.
In 1947 she married James A. Morrison, a civil engineer for the
Alaska Railroad Company. On his retirement in 1967, they moved to Sedona and
built their home, one of the first group of residences in the Sedona West
subdivision, that Wilma has occupied ever since. Her husband Jim died in
1989.
Wilma lived independently in subsequent years. She could say only
yes when friends or organizations needed her help and her days were filled
with her many interests (classical music, potting, and weaving were some) and work for
local organizations in particular the Northern Arizona Audubon Society and
the Sedona West Property Owners Association, both of which she served as
boardmember and officer. For many years she was a supervisor of local
voting as a member of the Election Board.
Her greatest love, and greatest commitment in her Sedona years, was
to the rehabilitation of injured songbirds, for which she was licensed by
the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Over the years hundreds of Sedona/Verde
Valley residents brought her thousands of injured birds for nursing and
return to the wild if possible. Her home was always a warm and happy place
full of birdsong and violins.
At Wilma's request, no formal services will be held. Donations in her memory should
be sent to Northern Arizona Audubon Society, PO Box 1496, Sedona, AZ 86339;
The Humane Society of Sedona, 2115 Shelby Drive, Sedona, 86336; or Sedona
Community Center, PO Box 2894, Sedona, AZ 86339.
We will miss you Wilma
